In my endless search to kill all my rattles see thread: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/rat...oasting-45900/ Today brought me to servicing my differentials that havent been done in who knows how long. Based on most parts Ive pulled off, it doesnt look like the guy before me did ****. Anyways, I got new fluid and all in the front and rear diffs, the noise is still there that I am chasing in my other thread so yea...on we go. But, it looks like my gears are pretty FUBAR as well, now Im an untrained eye...just going off what doesnt look right...and yea, well look for yourself and tell me how long I got on these.

Heres the rear D35: (notice the big *** chip that happens about every 3 teeth on the spider gears in the middle...

And now for the front:

So what ya think? I do minimal highway driving, but as it warms up I will be leaving the city and going about an hour-2hrs drive out. Most of this will be highway speeds about 55 or so if Im lucky with some open road where I can get up to full speed of 70ish. Is it a priority that I look at new gears? The last thing I need is for these to eat themselves 50 miles from home.

Thanks,

I've seen worse go for a long time, but any time you hear a strange noise, or feel something odd, those gears will be in the back of your mind driving you crazy. The fronts don't look bad, but the rears have a little chunker in them. For the price of the stock replacement side and spider gears, you can get a Loc-Rite or Aussie Locker.

Good time to replace the rear axle and regear if you ask me!

No better reason to do so...honestly.

Thanks for the responses guys. Im definitely considering trying to put in an 8.25 for the rear end. The front axle could use a new tube (lower control arm mount is messed up and rewelded...need to be replaced) too so yea...Im thinking I might just sell this and start with something nicer and less rusty if Ima have to dump that kinda money into it. I need this to last me at least through the summer and hopefully through the winter unless it sells beforehand. I only paid 1400 for it...prolly put about 500 into it so far and its runnin 20x better than it was. Bleh...

Your ring and pinion don't LOOK to bad just the spiders. Replacing the spiders is easy. In fact for the same price you could do a locker, Ausie or Lockright, which would replace the spider. A 8.25 or D44 from a Junkyard may be about the same money.

See that star headed bolt on the carrier going into the pin. Remove that and the axle shafts and the spiders will fall out. Install in reverse order.
