Yes, it is expensive, and to be fair, and no this does not defend the high price, but VW makes some of the best engines, that 1.9 TDI is one of the best engines ever built, it is on par with the beloved 4.0.

i bought everything to do this and i still think to this day it would work.... 6.2 diesel, 700r4 tranny/th400, and 241 from a 88+ chevy... 6.2's carry the same motor mounts as a 350 and same bellhousing pattern... only take 3 wires other then the alt and starter to make it run... almost submergable... not much bigger then a SBC and not bigger then a BBC which has been done.... no pricey adapters needed... the cheap and perfect swap.... alot of people have a bad tast for the 6.2's but there idiots that havent studied it... there still on the road today from the early 80's which is more then the cummins and ford guys can say... not only that there cheap and parts are cheap... once u study the few common problems and correct them first its a unstoppable motor with 20+ mpg's in even the suburbans... not its no drag racing diesel but its reliable and has plenty of enough torque to turn whatever tires you want to put on your cherokee...

i just found a cherokee with the 4bt swap that some guy bought from a mine company that was built for them... he bought it and pulled the motor for a different project and is selling the rest off for $600... buy another motor and stick it back in there and your good to go... although i think the tranny and transfer case needed to be rebuilt... still all the adapters and all were there... why cant i find stuff like that before someone pulls it all apart... would have been awesome and he probly got for next to nothing...

i would love a 4BT, but my first concern is availability of parts. in my area its hard to find one of those frito lay trucks. in those trucks the body and frame were aluminum. which means people with more money than me buy them for the aluminum and sell it as weight. usually said people have an organization which has a quick way of getting rid of the power plants, such as rebuild companies. in such event they have some sort of contract in which i cant get one.

now i am very highly interested in this mercedes 300 swap since i have a mint 350SDL turbo diesel as well. now i know that at some point there was a guy that was offering the bell housing adapter and everthing you need to swap it in, minus the motor and mounts. he is no longer offering this swap. WHERE CAN I FIND THE PARTS FOR THIS.

i figure that if i do need a part that might be found in a junkyard, i know i will have better luck finding mercedes parts, than 4bt parts.

PM me if you know where i can find this mercedes swap

Hi everyone, I am UK based XJ owner and XJ's were sold mainly over here with the VM Motori 2.5 Turbo Diesel. Gives pretty good MPG of around 35-40 MPG when on road and have a lot of low down torque when off roading. Cylinder heads are prone to cracking though and the engine was originally manufactured for boats but chrysler stuck it in for european market.

It was orginally a marine engine? Did not know that....how much do those engines usually run in a junk yard over there and do they use the same manual transmissions over there AX-5/AX-15? I almost thought of pricing one out and getting the computer for it then just swapping it in since its made to fit the XJ.

much more work then that... you cant even simply swap in a 4.0 in place of the 2.5 much less a diesel... heck you gotta cut out the frame mounts and weld in the the 4.0's just to do that... not to mention the tranny, wire harness, emissions, AC stuff... there are some in the US that came down from Canada...

I know itd be much more work then that but I would be putting the 2.5 into a cherokee the had a 4.0 in it previously. I probably wouldnt bother with AC because its just a giant waste to me anyway...dont even use it. Didnt know they even gave the option in canada, would much rather go out and just buy the whole jeep if thats the case, or a wrecked one at least to do the swap and get parts from.

So ive noticed....tried searching for one with no luck. Id have to drive probably way out in canada just to find one and even then it seems like its going to be sitting under a tree in someones back yard...all this remindes me of trying to find parts for my 78 little red express...almost non-exsistant. Will keep chasing possibilites though lol.

one of those down the street from me... there was one last year at the dealer... someone swapped a 5.9 cummins in it... made the stacks work for real... lol...

try using searchtempest.com... set it for unlimited distance or whatever... and use key words "cherokee diesel" search it every once in awhile and youll find one... last i checked there was one in OK somewhere... that how i found that one the state put a 4BT in...
