I have a 2000 cherokee with a/c, and when you run the defrost the compressor kicks in and out. my question is would it hurt anything if I unplugged the compressor so it doesnt run when in defrost maybe save on gas mileage.

Thanks Chris

If I were you, I think I'd rather have the answer to the question of "Why is my AC compressor kicking on with the defrost?"

Default AC Compressor

As my AC system was pooched, I dont run the compressor, it is there as an idler for the serpentine belt, the ac rad is gone as well as the condenser can, I shot a health dose of light oil into the compressor as it will still pump, intend to use it as on board air system (collecting rest of the stuff). Your compressor clicks on and off to insure it is lubricated. You could install as toggle in line of the power leads, set normally off, it will reduce the load on the engine in defrost mode, probably not a significant mileage saving, if you set to off, bring it back on line periodically to allow flow thru to prevent the compressor from seizing in the long run.

if your a/c condenser is gone you dont need the compressor,so you can just unplug it and go with it,my best tip would be to get a shorter belt and get your 3 HP back and make a couple of bucks out of the a/c unit, that way the belt would be almost free after you sell the comp.(and it wont hurt anything if you unplug it,since there is no gas in the dryer, your compressor try's to build pressure from the lack of gas,so just some tips i have picked up from personal experience.
