Data Corrupt, computer bad?
Hey whats up guys, I finally picked up a Jeep, 1996 4.0L 4X4. Somebody cut the cats out and threw and exhaust on it. Driving around it's dumping fuel and the check engine light is on. I hooked up my scanner (Snap On red brick) and I get the error message "Data is corrupted from Vehicle" I can't read any codes or clear them. I was wondering if you guys think the computer is dead or I got a bad ground. This thing is muddy inside and out, which made me think a bad ground. It fires up and runs, I drove it 3 hours home but it smelled of raw fuel, no smoke out the exhaust though. If you guys think it might be a ground problem, where are a couple of the grounds at, so I can start cleaning. Thanks

If you are smelling fuel... make sure it isn't leaking fuel....
More likely the evap was also cut out and the vent hanging from the bottom of the vehicle... that would definitely make it smell like raw fuel.

Ok, I checked and fuel is not leaking. I cleaned up the grounds, and I tried to check the codes using the key method (key forward 3 times) and It didn't work. Is the Computer bad? Thanks

Ok, well I guess I'm going to try and swap the Computer. When I go look at the computer's there are 2 different ones I can buy. A Stock w/Automatic Transmission for $240. Or Police package w/ Automatic Transmission for $180, any idea what the difference is? Could it just be shift points of the Tranny? I tried looking up on A1 Cardone's website and can't get any more info.

I'd get a cat and O2 sensor, you're computer wants input from it to adjust various settings. Not saying you're current computer is good or bad but its going to want that info.

With the rear O2 Sensor missing, wouldn't it just give me a bad O2 code, instead of causing the computer to stop functioning?

Good point. I just ordered a new computer. I will let you know how it turns out. Even if you get a new computer you will still be throwing 02 codes.
