You might want to check your headlight switch. This happened to me a couple of years ago. I had to replace the headlight switch. All the gauges were working, but without lights....hopefully this helps.

Nahhh, it only took about a half hour once I found the right screws to undo....simple replacement.

I would still check/replace the headlight switch. It should address your lighting issues along with your "beeping". As for your gauges being out, you might have a loose connection behind your cluster. For that you will have to pull out the dash assembly/bezel to get at it. Are ANY of your gauges working??

check your clusters wiring, some xj's had bad wiring behind them and need to be fixed soon. The first thing I would check would be the grounds then the individual wires then the whole harness if necessry. But I do not know everything and nor do I want to. Good Luck!

Same problem with mine, have no dash or console lights until i turn aftermarket radio power on! Headlight switch still operates the dome light though? Problem with wiring the aftermarket radios in?
