Well I have HIDs for headlamps, and they use ballasts, would I still need to use the harness??

I have no idea as I've never used HIDs. I DO know that stock headlamps can overtax the stock wiring.....

Since we are slightly hijacking threads here, I'm going to throw something out there.

My headlights work with switch (and hghi beams work with stalk on column), however dash, shifter, and 4wd lights do not work. The signals seem to work on the dash, but when I flip the high beams on, I do not get the normal high beam indicator. Also, turning headlight rheostat switch all the way left does correctly turn on the interior lights in the ceiling.

Does this sound like the headlight switch as well?

Possibly but have you checked the INST LPS fuse?

Ok, the following fuse and it seems to have resolved all my issues except my front running lights (the ones right under the headlights) still do not work.

15 - 15 Amp (Lt. Blue)
Instrument Panel Lamps, Clock, Radio/Clock & Memory,
Headlamp Switch, Parking Lamps

Behind the left headlamp and in front of the air cleaner are a few connectors. They get corroded and they happen to carry the voltage to the parklamps. That could be the problem or bulbs and sockets could have issues.....

Cruiser54, do you know which connector carries the voltage for the parking lamps, and specifically which terminal? I'd like to test with a light to make sure it's getting voltage to that point, which should either tell me it's the switch inside, or a short between there and the connector pack.

Dark blue, C102 connector with 10 wires behind driver's side headlamp.

Default Resurrecting old thread

I didn't want to start a new thread, and this has the most useful info so I'm bringing this one back. I have a 2000 XJ with the same problem: dash lights fuse blows as soon as the headlight switch is pulled out. I have changed the fuse (#6, 5A), checked fuse #1 & #12 (both good), replaced the headlight switch itself, removed the aftermarket radio, and still it's popping fuses like popcorn. I even removed the instrument cluster, and it didn't solve the problem. It was working one day, and out the next morning. Any ideas to keep me from having to trace the short would be greatly appreciated!
