Talking Dana 44

Trying to identify my rear axle..Just got the latest jp magazine and there is an article in there that says my 1991 xj with a factory tow package could come with the 8.25 or d44 as an option.. Mine does have the rubber plug with dana wrote on it..Does this mean its the 44 or could it still be a 35?Any way to tell the difference..Thanks

im pretty sure you have a 35 if it says dana, I think only 1987-1989 have the chance of a 44

If you have a Dana rear axle under a 1991 XJ, it is a D35. The only upgraded rear axle offered in 91 was a ChryCo 8.25. I ditched my 8.25 for a D44 that I snagged out of an 87 XJ.

What is interesting about my rear diff. It is a D35c but it does not have the plastic plug, it has a threaded plug.

If it's got the screw in style plug you have a NONE-C-Clip D35...

Hmm I got a 89 cherokee. It had a hitch on it but they cut it off which im assuming they backed into something and screwed it up. So I may have a D44 huh? I guess ill just have to look at it. Also if I do have a D44 would that mean my front is a D44 as well? Are D44's the best axles for this cherokee? Much better than 35? And why?

says d35c right on the side of the diff though. Unless the c is code for something else. Doesn't make too much difference to me as of right now really though. Unless it is a c and someone just bought the diff cover for any d35 and put it on there.

There is definitely one post 1990 XJ running around with a D44 rear axle but, that one is mine and the D44 was a "Buck Mod."!! It also has a locker and 4.56 gears...LOL.

The C stands for Corporate not C-Clip

D35C stands for custom. Meaning it left the Dana assembly line as an unfinished axle and the final parts were assembled at the Jeep assembly plant.

aside from it being the d35 is there anything good or bad about it having he C designation? I mean, it is over 20 years old now and I changed the diff oil a couple days ago everything looked good in there. I don't wheel it hard or anything.
