Thumbs up Dana 44

I found a D44 off a '79 Ford Scout? That is a direct bolt in for $100. With this swap would I have to change the driveshaft? I've done a D35 to Corp. 8.25 swap with no probs., but not an ABS D35 with NP242 to D44. Anyone know if this is right? It is coming from a good source just never heard of it b4. Got mah internet back so I'm back. har har har har muchos muchos graciuos

Do you mean International Scout, or Ford Bronco? I was under the impression that the D44 and the D35 used different driveshafts, but I could be wrong.

The scout D44 is direct bolt in? Make sure you check the gears, the one i found for sale was 3.73. I dismissed it cause I didn't think it was direct bolt in.

I think the IH Scout used leaf spring suspension, correct? That wouldn't be a bolt-in then.

The spring width is different (IH = 2, XJ = 2.5). On top of that, width between the springs is different.

Then add in the different bolt pattern (IH = 5 x 5.5, XJ = 5 x 4.5).

After that, you'll need to do some work on the brake likes. The IH "tee" is on the passenger side, unlike the XJ.

And then the last concern is the width. WMS on the Scout is 58 inches. The XJ is ~60.5. That is even narrower than the 8.8 axle. However, it may not be an issue with aftermarket rims.

The IH axle is fairly easy to install in an XJ. But it's anything but "bolt in"

Heh Heh Heh.

Thanks for the homage.

I work on a lot of axles ... but the main secret is I own/used to own a 78 Scout II.

No body & frame left ... but everything else is in my shop and basement in the hopes that I find a good one. :crossing fingers:

I swapped a D44 into my 90 XJ with Auto Tranny and 242 t-case. As I recall the drive shaft bolted right in but the shaft was too long because the snout on the D44 is about 3 inches longer than the old D35 was. So I shortened the shaft about 3 inches.

D44 snout is not 3 inches longer than a D35.

It's about 1/2 to 5/8 at the absolute most.
