Default Dana 35 diff

I just recently bought a 1989 2 door cherokee with the 4.0 straight 6.
It needs a new fuel pressure regulator.
The guy i bought it from said i need a whole new dana 35. Is that true or can it be rebuilt? IT runs and drives fine the way it is right now. IT wont go over about 35 though

No sense in rebuilding it. They are cheap from the JY, and while your their grab a 29 spline 8.25 or look for a d44. Might as well upgrade if your going to replace it.

I just put new drums on the dana. Will I need to buy new drums for the 44? Or can I swap mine over?
Anything else you reccomend I do with the truck? Or anything I should get at the JY? Also is the dana 44 the same size as the 35 or will I need to do some welding?
Thanks!

if the drums on the 44 are good then use the ones on it they dont have to be new to work. what years did the d44 come in the xjs? im on the hunt for one too, or a ford 8.8
i talked to a guy who did the 44 swap and he said it was literally a bolt in swap except for brake lines or something stupid like that.

I believe you can find the Dana44 in 87-89 cherokees with tow package (someone correct me if im wrong) Also look for the 29spline 8.25 in cherokees 97 or newer. The ford 8.8 is good also and they are easier to find in the jy but you would have to buy a conversion kit.

You are 100% correct about the 44's. 8.25's came from 91-96 in the 27 spline variety, and 29 spline from 97-01.

97+ was either a Dana 35 or the 29-spline Chrysler 8.25.

OP, why do you think there is something wrong with the D35? If it's just because the Jeep won't go over 35, I'd suspect it's something else. Rear axles either work or they don't.

so you just pretty much gotta look around and get lucky and find one from a 97 and up? i assume there is just a mixture of d 35 and 8.25 through out 97 and up?

Pretty much. 91+ was either a Dana 35 or the Chrysler 8.25, but the 8.25 was only 27-spline until 97 when they went to a 29 spline unit.

I found around where I live 97+ XJ's mostly have the 8.25.

As far as finding a d44, good luck. They are getting harder and harder to find, but they are out there.

And OP x2 what makes you think there is something wrong with your axle?

If your truck won't go over 35 it's probably the fuel pressure regulator (not enough fuel). If you're going to leave your Cherokee pretty much stock then the Dana 35C is fine. How many miles are on your vehicle? Rear differentials, with proper maintenance can last for several hundred thousand miles, however, the Dana 35's can need new carrier/pinion bearings after 100K. Mine were shot so I completely rebuilt mine along with new wheel bearings and added a locker.

If you buy a junkyard rear end what are you going to end up with?
