Default D44 question!

Just swapped an '87 XJ D44 into my '92. My question is, is there a way to tell from the tag on the diff, whether it has a limited slip or not. I am about 90% sure it has one, but just wanted to see if there is a way to look up the tag and know for sure...

i think the tag would have some indication of LS. its called Trac Loc, maybe look to see if it says that anywhere? one surefire way of knowing is to jack up the rear end so both tires can spin. spin one and see if the other spins in the same direction. if it does then you gots ur self limited slip/posi/trac loc

nothing of the likes on the tag, and when we were doing the brakes and adjusting the drums, were spinning the tires, but they didn't spin the same. only reason i question that it is, was when on dirt, both tires would get traction equally when i would break the tires loose... /shrug And when i am mentioning tag, it isn't what is stamped on the axle, but the tag on the diff cover...

hmmm maybe it is a Limited slip then. i guess spinning the tires when jacked up wouldnt work because then the driveshaft would have to spin too. and i dont know the "code" that would be stamped on the diff tag to tell. it could have an aftermarket LS. try google to maybe fine what to look for on the tag.

Pop off the diff!!!!!!! U need new fluid anyway. It sounds like u have open to me but there is only one way to know for sure. And if ur D44 has an aluminum center than its as good as a D35.

you are looking for clutches on the side of the carrier. an open diff wont have them, it will just have spider gears inside it:

open

lsd

It is a 44 pulled from an '87 XJ... And as i mentioned, i just filled it. It doesn't need new fluid... I was just looking for something to check the tag and see, since i don't want to redo sealing and filling it...
