If you can find a Dana 44 from a wrecked TJ Rubicon, you should be golden. However, there en-lies your problem: Finding a TJ Rubicon at a junk yard. You may not have to pay $2000 for it, but I'm pretty sure if you can find one, you will still pay a good amount because of what it is (especially if the guys running the junk yard know anything about newer Jeeps).

The Rubicon 44 isn't worth what you pay for them. It is a Dana 30 with a 44 center section so it really isn't much stronger if any than what you have plus it's a low pinion.

Actually a 30 with chromos would prob be stronger. HP 30 is basically as strong as a LP 44. Dropping the driveshaft 22-3 inches seems kinda dumb to me for a redressed 30 they call a 44.

So your saying if I put chromos in it it will hold up it is going to work in the river bottoms no rocks just sand and some meaty hills and dunes and lots of mud pits

Hard to say cause I don't know how you drive but I ran 33s and 35s on the stock shafts in my 30 and never broke a shaft. BTW it was locked as well. If you hammer on any front axle making it hop or with the wheels turned you will break it but if you are careful you should be fine till you can afford a beefier axle.

Don't waist the money on a dana 44 if you already have a dana 30 that you can make as strong as a stock dana 44.
I have 35's on a dana 30 with no problems. with cromo shafts( saw a pair on colorado4x4.org for $250) if you are going to get a locker you can get a larger spline count than stock. large u joints(same size as dana 44) tube brace (small truss to keep the axle from flexing, rustys sells one for cheap)
If you realy want some beef buy a hd high pinion dana 44 out of a old v8 cherokee.
