Plugs, wires, injectors, valves, distributor, rotor, random fluctuations in the space time continuum...

You can't hardly fart next to a 2000 Jeep without it throwing a code. If you had cylinders not firing you would have a CEL staring you in the face.

No disrespect to your dad or his auditory diagnosis but like others have said, if it weren't firing on 33% of it's cylinders... there would be a code. Something as simple as forgetting your gas cap will throw a code so if entire combustion chambers are just along for the ride...
