Default Cyl Head bolts....really?

So all ready to take my head off and I see these bolt heads I have never seen before....spline. So I found out I need a 13mm deep well spline socket. Well checked all over town, no one has em. Checked online, no reputable site sells them, and if they do its in a $100 set. So I don't really want to buy those since I will never use them again. Where did you guys get yours? Or how did you get the bolts out?

You'll never use them again? What, you never intend to ever remove the cylinder head of a Jeep again or what?

You might try to see if you can rent one, I don't know.

This is the sort of thing Jeep clubs are for.

Well ya maybe 10 years from now so I don't need a whole set. BUT, I found these:

Amazon.com: T & E Tools 1/4" Drive 13 Pc Multi-Lock Deep Spline Socket Set: Home Improvement Amazon.com: T & E Tools 1/4" Drive 13 Pc Multi-Lock Deep Spline Socket Set: Home Improvement

but is 1/4 drive safe for torquing down a head bolt to 110ft/lbs? Prolly not..

Check Harbor Freight. I was there today and they have spline sockets. Not sure if they had deep well. I just happened to notice them today. Something like $25 for a 9 piece set.

Not even. Min. 3/8" drive - 1/2" drive is safer if you can find it (I invariably use 1/2" drive sockets for head screws, or pretty much anything else that takes 80 pound-feet or more of torque.)

Here's a link to the Harbor Freight spline socket sets:

I'm not sure how good, or bad, their tools are. I haven't broken any of them yet. The right tool is key, but the wrong budget makes it tough. Good luck!

I saw those but none of them are deep well. There are threads above the bolt head for some reason so regular shallow sockets don't work.

I went there and they don't sell them nor have them to loan out. It's all good now though because I saw a thread that said to use a 1/2 Deep well 12 point 1/2 drive socket, so I bought one and it fit perfect with no slip.

not sure if you have different head bolts than I do, but I just used a deep 1/2" 12pt socket and it worked fine, only issue is the studs are long so try to find one with a large whole so the bolt fits through, the one I used was a little tight so i had to tap them on with a mallet, might ruin the threading but they are getting replaced anyway and i will find a socket with a bigger whole for the new studs.

good luck
