Default crankshaft sensor.

Hi ,

2000 Sport I have pulled the old crank shaft sensor out but noticed its nose was magnetic and my supposed Napa open box has no magnetism.

Does that mean its junk?

thx

What brand is the new sensor?

Napa sells good products, and the lack of magnetism doesn't necessarily mean the sensor is bad, it could be the sensor is designed to work with lower magnetism. I think I saw another thread of someone complaining the same thing of an NTK sensor, and those are good.

The Crank sensor is a Hall-effect magnetic switch that senses changes in it's magnetic field caused by metal objects passing close by. It reads the timing of open windows in the flexplate to determine crank speed and rotational position. The strength of it's magnetic field is absolutely important. The distance it is mounted from what it's trying to sense is also. Mopar sensors are made using neodymium magnets whereas most aftermarket one aren't. The one I put in my WJ would stick to a screwdriver hard enough to lift itself and it's harness off the table. The original one I took out after 200K miles wouldn't. Enough said.

With crank sensors especially, and generally with all sensors on these beasts, use Mopar/NTK/NGK only. The track record of others is really bad, even from sources that we usually consider to have quality products.
