The engine harness plug on my 96 for the crank sensor is destroyed, I had the individual female bits on the male pins (sensor side) plugged in and working well I broke one of the male pins .
rockauto only has blade type connectors not pins so I am going to hard wire it in for the time being
My Questions are
Can you fry the crank sensor if plugged in reverse? I might of done that and yes I discovered after the fact that I had the power wire marked the wires are still in the grey rubber thing so it would be a power/ground swap the middle signal wire remained the same
Are the wires on a 99 sensor the same pattern as a 96? I have a spare 99 sensor (yes I have a 96 &99)
If worse comes to worse could I cut the plug of it and use it? I was trying to find a diagram to see if the wires were in the same position?
96 is (clip on top left to right) PCM Power Signal Ground the 99? ...
Anyone had any experience with swapping sensors

Reverse voltage will kill a Hall Effect Sensor, which is what the Crank Position Sensor uses, very quickly. The 99 has the same flat pin connector as the 96, so you're SOL there. Look at a 94 XJ on Rockauto, you'll find the round pin version you need...

96 has round pins x 3 it is the odd year out thanks for the voltage tip
I think the supply voltage for the crank sensor changed in 98, and that's why the pin style was changed. Prior to 98 it was 8-volts, and after 5-volts, or vice-versa - I don't recall exactly.

These are the connectors and years for the American XJs but there can still be wierd builds. I have customers check their connector before ordering a CPS.
The change over from 8v to 5v was not the actual sensor but the change to the JTEC ecu (96 in North America) The JTEC had no 8v output.

a rectangular box on the inner fender ... LOL! ..Sorry i couldn't resist 3 plugs and it's obd2
I had to replace it a while ago and I was told I needed matching numbers for 96 models
there is no fsm for the 96 i have found I have 95/97/99 fsm's and the wiring config is all different to the 96 so I dont think I can use a 99 sensor
as on my harness is L to R PCM Power .. Signal .. Ground and on the 99 it is Signal .. PCM Power .. Ground so the wires on the sensor must be different? I ordered a new sensor from rockauto but that will take at least 2 weeks to get to the Aussie Outback I am going to hardwire the existing one in tomorrow and see if it starts? Hopefully the sensor is still good When I get the new I might have a spare for both XJ's or I will fit the new one with deutch plugs .. It is a mystery

Pcm connectors black, white and grey are A,B and C respectively.
A04 sensor ground
A08 crank signal
B31 secondary 5v
Map out what terminal is going where before anything. List the wire color of each terminal.
