engine dies
I have a 96 xj sport with the 4.0 h.o. Sometimes when idling down the road the engine dies but will start right back up. Any suggestions on my problem.

There are a dozen things it can be... I deal with problems like this every day.
I have a four-channel data-recording scope. I connect a test lead to the crank sensor output, distributor sensor output, coil trigger, and injector pulse. When it shuts off, I hit "pause" and rewind the wave array to see what sensor-signal dropped away.
Then I isolate that sensor... for example, a crankshaft position sensor has three wires: reference, signal, and ground. I will monitor each to see if the problem is the sensor, or if it is a signal-loss issue in the harness or PCM.
If you have no way of monitoring what is actually happening, you have to wait until the part fails completely to diagnose it.
