Default Craigslist find, now what?

Hello all, I just made my first over in the introduction section.

I put some vehicles up on cl looking to trade for a Jeep and I have one fellow with what appears to be a '88 cherokee (email pic and he is not a man of many words)

I know its an '88 with inline 6, auto and new tires and he wants to trade it for my box van listed at $3500 ob or trade for a Jeep.

Normally what I do is get something, do some research, then find out I paid too much for something I cannot use or sell. I then keep it around for a few years putting way too much time and money into it, finally paying someone to tow it off all the while listening to the little lady saying something like "I thought you said you werent going to buy any more blah somethin blah something" you get the sad sad picture.

Actually she is very supportive, I told her when we married "honey, I don't want much, just my own way"

All yall can imagine how well THAT went over, she's still laughing.

I forgot where I was going.

Oh! 1988 cherokee 6 cyl auto. Assuming that it has been takin care of (all his rigs LOOK good) and it hasent been thrashed can you please tell me if there is anything special I might want to know BEFORE I bite?

Our trips are for fun, just getting into geocaching, go out into the ding weeds looking for bigfoot (I know thats another forum) have a picknick so on and so forth.

Not much water to deal with around here , just gravity. Lots of hills and mountains, logging and forest service roads type driving.

I dont care about making it sound good or fast, but I probably will want to lift and lock it at a minimum. Are these good tranies?
Can I find all the parts my wife will be yelling at me for braking at napa or schucks?

I know a little about automotive, but not much about 4 wheel drives.

I have had a '77 gmc flat bed 4x4 for 3 years and only just put in 4 wheel drive for the first time the other day to see if it worked to advertise it.

I don't want to get something that wont be a good foundation.

Thanks for your time.

Sammy

Good good thank you.

I think he was just throwing it out there to see what I wood say. I say this because he also sent me a picture of a nice looking white 2000 3/4 4x4 Dodge pickup with construction racks and said he had that also if I was interested.

So my guess is he knows the value oh his Jeep is less than my van.
I just mailed him back asking what value he is putting on the truck, so I know where we are at.

I paid $6500 for my box van and only ran 4 tanks of gas through it, but I bought it at a dealership ($1500 in taxes) and a couple years ago.

So I thought if I could trade it for something to take 4 wheeling great.

I went out of business right after my grand opening and the box van just sits.

Thanks again, will keep you posted.

EDIT cause I'm a dumbhead. It has brand new tires but they look stock size, no lift or other mods that I can TELL from the pix.

I paid 2k for my 98 XJ, yes it has some problems but the trade in value once these things are fixed is 3500 so yeah thats way overpriced for an 88 unless its got very low miles.

just my .02

i got a 93 for 750 but ended up rebuilding the bottom end. as far as parts go they are pretty easy to find so far at least they have been for my 93, some things like wheel bearings and fuel pumps are pricey, there are usually several cherokees at the junk yards too.
