Default CPS too short

I'm throwing a new cps into my xj and picked one up from the local autoparts store and discovered that it was not long enough. I unhooked it from the pigtail harness and measured it up with the original I pulled from the xj and there is at least an inch of difference between the two, the stock one being longer. I ordered one from the dealership thinking that the auto store and goofed and ran into the same issue, theirs was too short. I talked to the guy with the parts desk and we went through the numbers stamped on the sensors and came up different. He then used the computer to check the part using my VIN and still came up with his.
What gives?
I'm using the wife's car as my jeep is sitting dead in the water right now but want to get it back running so we have the second vehicle again.
Any help is much obliged

What part number crank sensor do you have?

I've never heard of an actual MOPAR crank sensor coming up short, providing it's the right part number.

There were changes during 96. I often get wrong brake parts for my 90 cuz of the change in 91? I wonder if they gave you an early 96, and if that matters....

The CPS part number for a '97 4.0 engine is 56027866AC. "AC" is the new rev number, used to be 'AB"

For a 2001 4.0 it's part number 56027866AE. I think the '00/'01 CPS has a longer pigtail.

my part number is 56027866/2786. The dealership had the new 56027866AC. I got a hold of MOPAR directly and they told me that's what they'd sell according to my VIN as well.

I would "ONLY" buy a CPS from a dealer OEM.

That seems to be the common consensus. Unfortunately the parts desk jockey at my dealership is about as useful as mamory glands on a bull. I haven't been able to track down a CPS that actually fits right now, so I'm at a loss as to what to do next.
As far as I know the engine and tranny are original. Anyone know of any CPS's that are longer for different year models? I believe the 97 and up is all the same, not sure about earlier years

Maybe I am just kind of ghetto, but I would have just spliced a couple extra inches of wire in there and then drive the Jeep around happy to be done with it and not having to deal with Id10ts.

Some of us have trusted/used Napa for our different 2 wire CPS for 87-90's. Maybe give them a shot and see if the wires reach. (and no, not Autozone, Orilies ect...) Napa generally has decent quality stuff.

I thought about doing that. I may have sourced a longer one, should be in tomorro. Length isn't guaranteed. Will updated tomorroW when I get my paws on it

As I said in my previous post, I think the 2000/2001 CPS pigtail is longer. Go to an auto parts store and ask to see a 2000/01 CPS. Compare it with your old CPS pigtail.

I check at an autoparts store. The 00/01 use the same CPS as the 97. from my understanding they switched the style in 97 and up

Just splice two bits of wire into the factory harness to extend it a little bit, or see if you can work some play out of it.

snip, snip, snip, snip. solder/crimp/tape....

If these guys could turn a panel van into a tank each and every week.... Why didn't they just leave it that way?

Maybe, as I alluded to in post #3, some guy might have thought 96 was close enough. A mistake I myself might make. He lilely didin know of the changes, and more, the mid year changes in 96. I do get it you used your VIN....but did they?

I'm not disagreeing with crazy8. If it's in, solder up some jumpers to fill the gap. Less work then hastening it. Idk myself if that will work, but I think it will.
