Couple of questions
your issue with the key cylinder is not actually with the key and taking the wheel of or raplacing it will do nothing the thing you are playing with when you snake your hand up is a thin rod that gose from the cylinder to the ingnition switch which is mounted on the top side of the colum just behind the gages it is mounted with 2 screws or bolts one on each end one towards the firewall and one towards the steering wheel loosen them up and it is adjustable and is just resting on that rod adjusting this should fix your key issue its kinda a pain to get to the screws some times removing the gages helps if you have small hands it will have about 8wires coming out of it
if the ignition switch is broken they are about 12-15bucks at autozone if it really is your key cylinder which i doubt it is if messing with the rod fixes it they are 10-20bucks with 2 keys you would need both steering wheel pullers to change the cylinder out

There is an actuator that I move by hand which releases the key. I understand the rod that you are talking about but I am not moving that. There should be a lever or button on the column cover to move the actuator that releases the key but it's gone now.

ooohhhh okay i was thinking on the older ones your talking about the actual realease button by the cylinder sorry thought you ment when you were snaking your arm up the dasah you were playing with that rod
Understandable. When I searched google for a solution the rod answer came up. When I had my hand up there trying to figure out how to move that rod was when I happened across that actuator. It's on the left side of the column. I'm going to just have to remover the column cover and rig something up or just leave the cover off so I can release the key w/o going through the contortion act.
