Default A Coupla Questions

97 Country...4.0

I just replaced the manifold gasket due to a split in the exhaust manifold and a broken stud. Everything turned out good except... There was no way I could get a torque wrench on all the bolts ( and one of the 2 nuts ). I torqued the ones I could, in sequence of course, and just guessed at the others.
I've read somewhere that you can test for exhaust leaks with some throttle body cleaner...does anyone know how to do that?

Thanks for any input....this forum is great.

Have a great weekend folks.

With the engine idling, spray throttle body cleaner along the manifold flange/head mating surface, one cylinder at a time. When you hear a noticeable change in engine RPM's, you've found a leak.

The procedure Dan posted is correct, but it is used to check for intake leaks. You asked about exhaust leaks. You should be able to hear an exhaust leak.

Yep, they usually make a pretty good noise. Often a "tick" that sounds a lot like a stuck lifter. Listen to most any older Ford 460 for an example, lol.
You can also check for exhaust manifold leaks with some soapy water. Pour it on there with the engine stone cold, let it run around the bottom then start it up and look for bubbles.
You have to work pretty fast, the manifold heats up pretty quickly, boiling off the water and sometimes closing the leak back up via expansion.
