Hey guys,
My mechanic told me that my steel brake lines are so corroded (leaking, losing pressure) and that they will need to fabricate some new ones. They estimated it will probably take about 8-10hrs at around $82.56/hour.
Is this reasonable? Seems expensive to me. Any better alternatives? Thanks.

Get some 3/16th's steel tubing, couplings and connectors, a double flaring tool and get busy. You can bend the line by hand or get an inexpensive bending tool. The line comes in pre-cut, pre-flared pieces or you can buy a 25' roll from NAPA and make your own flares (with the double flare tool). Cut the line where it's not rusty (close to the front) and couple the new stuff in from there.
You might need a new axle block (they don't cost much) and if you either break or just can't loosen the rear bleeders, you'll need new brake cylinders (**replace both**).
I did mine not too long ago for the first time ever. I did the lines, the block, both cylinders and even new line to each end of the axle. Like you I was quoted an outrageous price and it turned out it wasn't too bad a job at all.
Some will say "use compression fittings". DON'T. There will be many arguments for, but the simple fact is they're not for high pressure brake use nor will they go unnoticed by a good DMV inspector.
