Default Coolant line?

I noticed I have a pretty decent leak from the line in the photo it connects to the metal line coming out of the radiator and I would assume goes to the transmission.
I have a few questions:

What is the line really?
What is in the line? Coolant or Trans fluid?
Is it easy to replace?

Trans fluid.

You have a couple options. (Well there's more but as far as just getting rid of the leak)

You could buy a new stock replacement line, I got some at summit for like $25-30 a piece. Other places charge a lot. Rock auto might be cheap too. If you do this buy a quick fitting tool so its easy to remove them. They're cheap at harbor freight.

You could also cut the line there, eliminate the fitting there where its leaking, flare the metal line out a bit and tighten the hose part down on it with a couple hose clamps.

When I changed it, it wasn't easy but it is pretty straight forward. They are called transmission cooling lines. One that goes from the tranny and another for the return.

I changed them completely, from the transmission to the radiator (new radiator too). The hard part is getting the old ones off. I had to drain the transmission (only do this if you remove the lines from the transmission side), cut the metal lines to remove and replace the nuts on the transmission the lines go into (mine were rusted), then all the clips that hold them in place. Getting the lower line connection to the transmission tube that clips on was the hardest part as the clip I had didn't connect right. I had to use hose clamps in the end.

and look at post #46 for Dorman coolant lines for the 97-01 XJ's. Dorman coolant lines can be obtained at the auto parts stores, like O'Reilly, Advance. etc.

Edit: I'm not very observant - I now see that you have a 2001.

That's a much nicer one than the HF version lol but the HF one is dirt cheap and worked.

I just replaced that hard line from the radiator (top fitting) to the hose yesterday. $9.99 at Advance (for a 95 xj). If it's in that year range, it's a simple swap. 15 or 16mm gets you off the radiator, and a pair of needle nose get you off the soft line. Pinch the tabs on the plastic fitting, push the two lines together than pull. The sealing mechanism is 2 orings inside the metal end of the hose. Transfer the plastic clip to the new line, grease up the underlying and shove it in. You might be able to just replace the orings. If they are your issue, you'll need to replace the hose, not the hard line.
