Default Considering 2001 XJ purchase, Questions??

I'm looking at a 2001 XJ and have few questions.

1st a friend of mine is a rockcrawler owns a TJ and said a XJ is a good vehicle, but will need to frame out the unibody to do any rough offroading.

2nd XJ I am looking at has 125,000mi on 4.0L I-6 is this ok mileage (auto tranmission).

Mileage is not near as important as past ownership. If they took care of it, 126 is nothing.

1. as for as framing the unibody I think its overkill unless you are going to be doing some serious rock crawling adding aftermarket trans cross member and skids can help stiff the chassis.

2. X2 on the care by the previous owner(s)

If the shape of interior and outside tell the tale, then it never went off road. I mean really both look as good as new.

Your uni-body will be fine for most wheeling. Skid plates can be found online, just Google Cherokee or XJ skid plates. If your on a budget you might check the junkyards for a cash for clunkers XJ with the factory skids, their out there. The first peice of armour I recommend if the Jeeps in great shape and you want to keep it that way are rock sliders to protect your rocker panels. After that your transfer case is probably your most vulnerable component. Good luck with your build!

steer away from the 00 and 01 xjs if you can. the 0331 head castings are prone to cracking and they come with the low pinion front axle.

I gave 3400 for my 2000 XJ with 200K on the clock !!!

BUT I knew the owner and know that he kept up with the service and he never drove it like I DO....LOL

The life of these motors depend on CLEAN FRESH OIL !! If you keep the oil changed and take decent care of the motor they will run until the Pigs Fly !!
