I have a 1997 jeep Cherokee and I go to start it and the speedometer will start jumping all over the place when it does this the jeep will bog down and then eventually die. I have no idea where to start on this thing and my help would be appreciated Well my Jeep doesn't have a problem starting or idle. Sometimes it will drive fine. It will only sputter and bog down when the speedometer goes crazy. I've replaced the speed sensor, tps, idle control sensor, alternator, and battery.

 

Go though and clean up all of your grounds. Intermittent electrical issues suck to track down but many problems with the XJ's electrical system can be traced back to bad grounds.

AFter that I would start chasing wires and looking for broken or chafed wires. With 1997 being a transitional year they can sometimes have temperamental electronics.
