Question NP231 to NP242

The NP231 in my '96 is having some problems. I've access to an NP242, will shifter linkage and driveshafts work? Transmission is the AW4.

I did the opposite swap on my 97 and the only thing different was the plug for the 4x4 light on the dash.

You also want to get the shift gate and bezel. Makes life easier.

Yes I forgot about that, I don't think the gates are any different but the bezels are obviously.

The gates are indeed different

Left: NP242
Right: NP231

The bezel is less of an issue than the gate itself.

Oh, and going from a 231 to a 242....the wiring is not physically present to light up the "Full Time" indicator so you'll have to run a wire from the tcase plug up to the dash. Personally, I have just left the switch disconnected so that may not be entirely accurate but that's my recollection.

This swap is on my list as there are a lot more 231 equipped XJs out here so it'll be much easier to find and simply swap the 242 in.

Not sure what year it is. It's 23 spline though. I don't care much about the full time light, or the bezel. But good to know the gates are different

They gates are different but my 231 works just fine with the 242 gate.

Question: Are the rear driveshafts the same length? I know with ZJ's, going to a 249 to a 242, they are different. My XJ is a 2000 which probably limits my supply of 242's unless one from a WJ will fit. The later ones don't have the speedo sensor in them. IDK if mine does because I haven't looked yet. IDK if my XJ shifts by cable either. I'll have to peruse my FSM.

Okay, my FSM says the 242 for my 2000 shifts with the standard rod linkage and has the speed sensor in the tail housing of the t/case. SO all that remains is the spline count, I guess. Would my AW4 have a 23 spline count?

I replaced the 242 in my 97 with a 231 out of a 2000 model, everything fit and bolted up just fine.

That's reassuring. Thanks for that. Now all I have to do is find a good one! You don't still have the 242, do you?

I still have my 242 but I am keeping it for a spare.

That's okay. I really didn't expect you to sell it to me. Just the logistics of shipping it and the money transfer would be stupid! I'm sure I can find one locally. I'd probably keep my 231 as a spare also.
