Commander headlights on an XJ?
you said the cherokee is your daily commuter right? that just makes this idea even more stupid. even if you do accomplish your goal and get these headlights to somehow fit do you really think you are going to be able to do it in less than a couple of weeks.
you will have a daily driver w/o headlights for a while and if you do pull it off it will probably be unsafe. headlights are kinda something you dont want jerry rigged.
look in to the hella or ipf light conversions if you want more light and a slightly more modern look. they will be cheaper and easier than commander lights and your jeep wont look retarded.

Not so much negative as it is pointless.
Do you even know how much Commander headlights are?
250 bucks a pair. WOW I just think you would be better off adding some fog lights are maybe trying to swap in a brighter bulb.

Yes I'm aware of the price. To me it's worth a try. Hopefully the measurements will be close.

meh, after reading this thread all i can think is its his jeep, he can do with it what he wants. everyone has different tastes and can do what they like, if its something he wants to do he can. if you dont like it you dont have to do it. just seems like you guys are being very negative towards him about this whole thing, so what if you think its pointless obviously he doesnt.
i say do it. if you think it would be cool, and want to do it, then do it.
who cares what other people think is "pointless" its obviously not pointless to you.
just be warned, itll take some modding, and once you cut you cant go back... at least not cheaply

that said, you probably don't d/d yours. fact of matter is that this is a weekend to install (at most) and a weekend to button up loose ends. so who the eff cares man...it's simply his jeep, his money, and frankly I think it looks just fine.
I have parts for a 2500 front clip for my DD/wheeler...but I drive less than 10 miles a week with it typically and I would not hesitate to drive it in day light with no headlights. what's gonna happen? you think a cop actually can justify writing a ticket for no headlights? NOPE. they can issue a ticket, but it wouldn't hold up in court...he was in the middle of replacing them and had to make a parts run. simple "repair headlights" warning would be all it could hold up to.
and it's not like our xj's have day time running lights either...the headlights are on when we physically turn them on. I.E. presumably when it is dark out. so he can just not drive it at night (which, frankly, is most likely when he's gonna be having a beer and finishing up the project).
anyways...I wouldn't buy new ones. find a wrecked commander somewhere and grab them used.

coming from a guy with a 97+ xj that's back-halfed (and looks like the one on pirate that wanted to put cadillac tail lights in it), I think you should probably shut your yap.

Woah woah. Back Off. He has a good point, head lights ARE NOT something you want jerry rigged. If it is his daily driver he prob will be driving at night time, or during the day...what happens when it starts raining or is foggy? You need to be realistic, head lights are a must.
Thanks guys for all your support (positive or negative) Guys, please keep in mind that this is not something I will do on my own. I plan on getting measurements first, then if it sounds right then I will buy them and then take them to a body shop and ask them if they think it's possible to do. I'm not rich or anything but if I spend $250 on the headlighs and they're no good....then that's it. No big deal. I just have this idea stuck in my head and I really think it could work. I'm sure all of you have been there.
If the photo with the Blue XJ is real, then I think YES it's possible to mount those headlights.
I know this forum is all about offroading, taking your jeep apart yourself and etc, but I live in Miami. Here in Miami, not many think about going offroading because there's really nowhere to do it. Maybe in the everglades, but there are few who go. So spending the $250 (for the headlights) on suspension stuff, 3" lift and etc is pointless for me.
Thanks guys,
~Rory

i say if you're crafty enough, go for it.
if you fak it up, you could just replace the header panel and install something simpler, like the HID conversion, or even a set of LED headlights.
just do some simple research, and do your wire hacking on the end piece of your harness, so if you do mess up, you can still clip in the new harness from the replacement header panel.
giv'er a go mang.

just because you or the guy who posted don't think you could handle getting the wiring harness and headlight mounts done in a day doesn't mean that this guy can't handle it.
it doesn't look like a project anyone should cry about.
