When my XJ is cold in the morning, it's tough putting it into 1st gear. What does that signify? An oil change or a potential rebuild?

changing oil isnt going to help tranny. its possible your tranny fluid is low though. had that happen before. does it only happen when its cold?

I guess you are talking about the manual transmission? If you are talking about the manual the first thing you need to do is check transmission oil level. Sometimes if the manual is low on oil it will not shift that good until it is warmed up. Also if it is cold like in 0 degrees it will be hard to shift, We used to back into parking spots in Montana in the Winter, and put the transmission in first so we could drive it slowly for a couple of blocks to get the oil warmed up so we could shift gears.

you have Peugeot BA 10-5 5-speed transmission (aka the Puke alot!). it is very well known for this issue and there is nothing you can do about it. this tranny is crap and there is nothing good about it. you can change the fluid but good luck getting off the odd shaped fill hole. i had that tranny and went through 2 of them. it is all around a Piece of ****. sry you have it but just change the fluid and when it warms up it should be fine

This 5 speed manual transmission was made by Borg Warner and Aisen(sp?), one of the first Aisian and American collaberations. I'll check the fluid level and change the fluid if I can. I didn't know you could do that without removing the tranny.

You're syncro for the first gear is just worn out. happens. and or some dog teeth are rounding off some, and or the blocker ring surface is worn.

It is cheaper swapping in a AX-15 like I did a year ago or so, much cheaper than tearing into for the syncros.

But my POOP's input gear rounded off by over loading the poor Heep, so I broke mine.

Fresh fluid might help, but not likely.

I thought I had the AX-15. So you're says I should just swap in a rebuilt unit? Where can I find a rebuilt AX-15? Are there any good vendors?

junkyard, your best friend. rebuilt units will cost you like 1500 bucks. the AX-15 is a pretty stout transmission and you can usually find it in good condition.

I was afraid you were going to say junkyard.
Not much around these parts. I'd have to have one shipped in from afar.
There must be someone who sells rebuilt units for a fair price besides the dealer.
$1,500 is a fair price for a rebuild with low mileage.
Problem with junkyards is you don't really know what you're getting and no guarantee it won't be just as bad.

man that stinks you have no junkyards. thats a xj'ers best friend. i have an awesome one down in denver called boot hill. you can buy anything and if you dont like it or it doesnt perform how you would like return it and get another one. no queastions asked. you need one of those in bc. or you could find another xj up in bc and buy it for parts and use the trans but again no guarantee unless you drive it before. it will probly be cheaper than a rebuilt trans.
