Default coffee in the t-case

today i noticed the rear driveshaft seal on the t-case is leaking, and the fluid coming out looks like coffee. i've been doing a LOT of water wheeling lately so i guess that explains it.

4hi & 4lo still work fine, and its not making any noise so im hoping its not f***'d. whats the best way to go about fixing this, just replace that rear seal and drain + fill ? is there a filter in there?

it's a np231, thanks

There's no filter. Just drain, replace seal, refill and enjoy!

dex/mercon III right?

is this common, or should the tcase be able to keep water out? both axles diff vents have been relocated up high, but i never got around to checking where the tcase vent is. if its not common for water to get in, what typically allows water to leak in, other than the vent tube?

Yes its dextron mercron 3 and the only two ways to take on water are either a bad seal or vent. Also not all T-cases have vents so atleast replace the seal.

To offer a correction.. the t-case DOES have a filter, however it is usually only worth replacing if the entire t-case is torn apart..which you have to do to change it.

I've torn apart 205s, D20s, BW1356s and my 242 and haven't seen a filter. Is there one in the 231?

I have had the opportunity to pull apart my 231, and yes thee is a filter. It's a small metal screen on the oil pickup tube for the output bearing, kind of looks like a screen in your kitchen or bathroom faucet. There is also a magnet there I believe? Not anything you should feel necessary to replace like an oil or tranny filter, unless you were installing a SYE or rebuilding the TC, in which case you may just clean it out.

Yep, like he said. It's basically a little screen, but still a filter. Noone really worries about it unless they tear down their t-case because usually the little magnet collects anything that might re-circulate. IIRC, the magnet has to be positioned in the t-case in some special place or things can slip by. Some guys for peace of mind install a magnetic drain plug. But, as stated, this is something not to drop your coffee over, yell "Oh crap", and jack the jeep up. I dont even think that filter has a maintenance schedule or anything.

For those who are curious:

Notice item # 39, which in this diagram is called the pick-up screen.

This is the actual filter/pick-up screen/condom etc.

Well that's a first for me ill admit. Thanks for bringing it to my attention cause if I ever have to tear one apart ill know they have it. My shop teacher hated a saying of mine that its impossible for one person to know everything about every vehicle. But that's why we are here to swap info and help. Thanks

Couldn't agree more. 80% of what I know about my XJ I will proudly say I learned from this forum. The other 20%... let's just say bad experiences and a Haynes manual lol.
