Default code 44

I just changed my battery in my 95 XJ. The battery ends where on the opposite side of the battery. I put the battery in and i had to stress a few wires on the positive side to make the clamp fit on there. After i hooked it up i tried to start the jeep. It sputtered really bad then died. I started it again and gave it gas for about 3 mins. After that, it stayed at 800 RPMs then died again. The CEL came on before it died, code 44. Any ideas of what to check or do for the next steps to fix this so i dont take it to a shop. I bought a positive side extension cable for it so you guys have an idea of what i have to work with. The whole reason i had to stress the wires was because the battery clamp was able to go down all the way without hitting the battery, stopping the clamp from going down. Any ideas would help and ?s if you got them. Thanks

If you take out the battery tray and turn it over, you will find the Battery Temperature Sensor.
