Does it leak?
Check firewall at pedals.
Does it work better if pumped a few times first?

just checked for leaks at firewall inside cab and there's nothing. engine bay is same story and the master cylinders fluid level has stayed the same. does seem to help to pump it a couple of times but now in second gear when i let off the gas it produces a high pitched whine. not loud but definitely noticeable.

Might just be a bad slave cylinder. Check it for leaks and bench bleed a new one before installation, if it needs to be replaced.

what do you mean by bench bleed? and the slave isn't leaking either. i put my finger in the master cylinder and at the bottom the fluid is heavy black. could the slave be bad without leaking?

Change them both, it will give you peace of mind knowing that they have both been replaced.
