Clunking shake underneath on cold start.
Hello, I have a 93 4.0 cherokee sport 4X4 auto trans. Upon a cold start I get this shaking clunky sound that can be felt underneath, it occurs for 1-2 seconds as the engine is firing up. It doesn't seem to be present when the engine is warmed up but I think it's getting worse. Anybody have experience with this or a good idea of what it could be???? I laid underneath while some one started it and couldn't even hear the sound from the outside, the starter drowns it out, it is a lot more audible from inside the cab. Nothing appeared to be loose either. I'm thinking it might be internal.

mine has ben doing the same thing. it appears to have gotten worse since it first started in the summer. i have not been able to get under it yet. the handle trick did work all summer but now its not now. im thinking its my down pipe hitting the tranny cross member or the t-case linkage slapping. so i would check those things.
im also chasing down a clunking sound on the pass. side. i did the wheel shake and the balljoints and all seem fine. hell they actually look new. its been raining so im just waiting til i can crawl under there and shake some more stuff around. my sway endlink bushings are shot. that could be it. i have new ones with my lift kit,but its not installed yet.

There is a TSB for the shifter linkage that causes a rattle/gearnoise in the passenge compartment. Basically it requires work on the linkage or a new one to fix it

I also used to get a similar sound that was subtle when it would idle in drive, right under the shifter, but I haven't heard that one in awhile, might have went away when I replaced my trans mount.

I believe is Technical Service Bulletin.
What years are covered in the TSB, i have the same issue. If its not fully warmed up it does it on turns too. Sounds/feels like the trans/transfer case area. I also read about flex plates bolts making a similiar sound on start up.

I'm probably going to put it in the shop Friday, I will let them know about the TSB and post back with the results. Of course I may not have the money to get it repaired. Can it cause any further damage?

Good chance your exhaust is hitting on the trans/transfer case crossmember due to bad engine and/or trans mounts. Get down there and take a look.
