Default Clueless as to adding a lift on top of a lift...

If there is somewhere else i should be looking then please re-direct me,but as of now i have a 2" lift by rough country. I didnt install it the previous owner did, so i have no clue whats in there... i know i want to add another 1.5" but i dont have a clue what parts i would need, because i already have the 2 inch lift. can i add on top of that lift? or do i have to start all over? i also need a softer ride from what i have now..My ride feels like there arent even springs in there.
EDIT: i also need something generally inexpensive. ( reasonable)

What kind of lift do you have?

New leaf packs and coil springs
AAL with coil springs/spacers?
Blocks and coil springs/spacers?
Shackles and coil springs/spacers?

Once you tell us this then we can tell you if you can add to it and how to do so.

If its Rough Country's 2" budget boost then its just the shackles for the rear leaf and spacers on top of the front coils. If that is the case, you can "add" to it but if your goal is 3", just buy a new leaf pack and 3" coils.

Since you're asking these questions, you might want to do a little research and get familiar with what all changes in an XJ's suspension/steering/driveline when you lift it. The key to having a SAFE, dependable, rig is in the components...

Most people go with leaf spring blocks and coil spacers, especially for a smaller lift like you are talking about. If this is indeed the case you'll see hockey puck like things above the coil springs.

^^^ & blocks between your axle & the leafs in the rear. Otherwise you'll have longer shackles on the back end of your leafs!

If your looking for a softer ride Old Man Emu is the best your going to get for a lifted xj. If you get a new suspension kit with new leafs and springs you can add your current BB to the new lift.

AAL with coil springs/spacers? A single stiffer leaf installed into the factory leaf spring (Add a leaf) and a hockey puck type spacer over your coil spring (or a new coil spring)
Blocks and coil springs/spacers? Blocks go between the leaf spring and the spring pad on the axle
Shackles and coil springs/spacers? Shackles are what the leaf spring bolts onto in the back, Its like a hinge between the spring and frame it allows the spring to change lengths (flex) and still be solid mounted to the frame.
See above in red for descriptions

I say your best bet regardless of what you have now is to get s 3 inch lift with all new springs and coils. That will also help your ride issue. (it will never be a Cadillac)
