Default Clicking/Clunking coming from front end

2000 Jeep Cherokee and I have this awful clunking noise noise that sounds like it's coming from mid front end. It sounds near the transfer case when I stick my head out the window to pin point it when i'm driving but who knows. I do not have to be turning, going straight you can hear it as well. Very prominent sound when you coast at 20 mph. Can you give me any ideas on what to look for? my drive shaft is solid, no play up down, side to side. could it be gears?

climb under your jeep and try to rotate your front drive shaft by hand.... mine had play in it and would make a click clack sound... I took out the front drive shaft and eliminated the sound...obviously something is F.ed in my transfer case....

Sounds like a bad U-joint to me. i had the same sound not too long ago - here's my thread about it, it should help you! BTW, when you check the driveshaft, i would put both the tranny and t-case in neutral and move it all around to check for play.

Thanks. I'm heading to a "pull a part" place in charlotte to find some misc parts for the jeep and I will check that driveshaft better today.

Also if you've been doing any towing might
be the chain in the transfer case they stretch
from time to time
