In the past few weeks my 96 Xj has been reluctant to start on the first turn of the key. Sometimes it will start right up but 80% of the time it will click like the starter is engaging but nothing happens, sometimes it will take 3 or 4 turns of the key to get it to start. The battery is charging properly,( it's new), and the alternator is putting out the proper voltage. Is my starter on its way out? Or is something else to blame?

 

When's the last time you serviced your battery terminals? Start with the basics.

 

Check your terminals, cables and connections. If not then you can start looking at things like the starter. Always start with the basics and simple things before moving to the major stuff.

 

Mine did that i replaced the starter. It was good for a week or two then the relay went bad. Easy test switch the ac relay with the starter relay.
