You just need to adjust the NSS. There are 2 nuts on it. 1 is the adjuster nut. Loosen it and move it a slight bit and then retighten it. Then try starting it in P and N and see if you have reverse lights. You'll have all 3 when you hit the sweet spot

Per the AW4 Service Booklet the nut is only tightened to 61 inch pounds. I over tightened mine a couple of weeks back when I did the same thing. Also cracked what the nut tightens down on as well so BE CAREFUL.
go here and scroll down for the pdf of the booklet. detailed steps within on install and adjustment. The fact that you have already done the rebuild means you really are ahead of the game even if you don't feel that way.

Good Luck.
Wow I actually feel like I might have contributed finally!

Yeah you just didn't get it positioned right. Usually takes a couple try's. Loosen the nut and try to position it perfect, then tighten to correct lbs.. Reverse lights should now work, and start easily in park. Amazingly I got it perfect my first time and didn't even know what I was doing at the time lol
I just did mine as well and over tightened the bolt and made it hard to shift. Loosened it a bit, and much better, I prolly even have a bit more to go if I really wanted to get it back to where it was prior to working on it.
I too got mine the first time, didn't have to re-adjust. Sure there is not more to your problem than just the NSS if it is starting like crap?

A trick I used when I replaced my old NSS with a new one was to put the trans in reverse, key ON, with my garage door closed I watched the reverse lights turn on and off as I rotated the switch back and forth, then split the difference and carefully tightened the nut. It then started fine in Park and Neutral with reverse lights.

There's an easier way. There's a line on the side of the switch body that gets lined up with the center line of the shaft flats when the transmission is in neutral.
That alignment score isn't always accurate, it's hard to see, and it's difficult to line up if you don't have a lift. I used a mirror to line the score mark up perfectly, it started fine but my reverse lights would only come on occasionally. I've found the reverse light method to be the most effective.

Been there and done that. My experience absolutely mimmicks F1Addict's.
