Default Chrysler 8.25 vs FoMoCo 8.8

so a buddy of mine is really into mustangs, and has a couple of them laying around on his shop floor. Ones mine if i want it. This one is posi with disk brakes. Whats a better axle? And what am i looking at to convert it over to 8.8?

8.8 is a stronger axle and LSD is a big plus in my book. I think all you have to do is relocate spring perches and make customs shock mounts.

Someone else confirm this please, I am interested in a similar swap.

Here is the bracket kit I used to do my 8.8 swap. Most of the info I found, this was the best way to go rather than trying to reuse all the old brackets.

There is NO WAY you need to pay 200$ for "hardware" to put an 8.8 in a Jeep. You can re-use the Explorer U-bolts/nuts, spring perches and plates just fine. You can even use the Explorer swaybar brackets modified to be the axle shock mounts.

Don't forget that an 8.8 axle needs to have the axle tubes welded to the carrier/housing. They are pretty much just pressed in there & will turn on you.

if you have a 29 spline 8.25 already and are running 32's or smaller I wouldnt swap it unless its very cheap and you have welding and cutting skills.

Mustangs have 28 spline 8.8's like rangers do and not the 31 spline like explorers use.

Rule of thumb only re-use u-bolts if you cannot afford any ,they stretch very easy when you torqe them, and twist when you remove them. Only an idiot re-use's one use u-bolts.

thanks for all the helpful info, so it looks like the free 8.8 out of the mustang is more work than its worth. ill leave the 8.25, unless a explorer 8.8 falls out of the sky and lands at my feet.

i just called my local jy and they said they want 250$ for a rear. is that a little high on price for a 8.8? or even a 8.25. i got a dana 35 and im looking for a swap.

Look at EBAY what are they going for on there??????

I have wheeled D35s in Jeeps for about 30 years and NEVER had one break where ANY axles wouldn't have done the same. Swapping out your D35 will not prevent axle failure......... It will only keep the D35 you have from failing. If it ain't broke why fix it?? Use the $$$ for wheeling, not fixing parts that are not broken.... YET.

To take that even further, if you wheel on a D30 and haven't broken a front u-joint yet then you're not doing it hard enough.

Had one come apart on you?
Or just information regurgitated from the internet?

Lots of things are "just pressed in" including the c's on your front axle.

I picked a 29 spline 8.25 with 4.10 gears out of a 4banger cherokee in a junkyard a couple weeks ago for $107 with a year warranty. Jax, fl
