Default Chrysler 8.25 Rear...good upgrade?

I'm thinking of replacing my stock rear axle to a Chrysler 8.25. Is this a good idea to take care of before or after I get a lift? Here is the link to the one I thought of buying. http://greenville.craigslist.org/pts/2119820473.html

I know absolutely NOTHING about axles, transfer cases, gear ratios...etc. Any knowledge you guys could teach me would be nice.

I have a 1998 XJ Sport with Dana 30 in the front and Dana 35c in the back.

Thanks!

See if the seller will at least let you pull the cover. Look for metal, broken or galled parts.

ETA: Grab the driveshaft too, I'm not sure if the yokes are the same.

Good upgrade, but if it's got a different gear ratio than the axle in your Jeep currently you're going to need to switch gears in one or other other so that they match..

I probably wont be able to set up a meeting with the owner until well after christmas due to work and such...but then again I could just get a C8.25 out of a junker lot if its sold.

The later (97+) 8.25 axles have 29 splines as opposed to the earlier 27. The 29 is stronger...

I'd hold out for the 29 spline version, they can be had for about the same price.

Shafts and carrier or at least spider gears.
