Chromoly Shafts and locker
I have not swapped my rear axle yet. i am looking for a d44 but havent found one for the right price yet. Anyway, i have a chance to buy another D35 with 30 spline chromoly shafts and a lockrite locker in it for $175. i would like to know someones thoughts on this. how much stronger does the chromoly shafts make the turdy five? any help would be great.

almost as strong as the chrysler 8 n a quarter, only weakness is the diff housing and axle tubes. id buy it, the locker is worth $100 at least and the chromemoly shafts run around $700.....itd be da best $175 for a turdy five youve ever spent

For 175, if everything is right and it needs nothing Id ****** it in a heartbeat. The locker(while being a cheap lockrite) is worth that. I cannot tell you how much stronger chromoly is though.

chromoly shafts are definitely a lot stronger than stock shafts, but the d35 is probably still a c-clip axle setup.
the locker is a plus, but if you snap a shaft, it's still gonna walk out of the axle tube.
but 175 is a good price for a locker and chromo shafts.
i'd still take that 175 and put it towards a d44. even stock it's as strong as a 35 with chromo shafts.
a lock-rite is only about 250 bux and easy to install. and a 44 isn't c-clip either.

ya but $175 for a locked turdy five until he can afford the D44 is damn good deal, cause most people drop $500+ on rebuilding/regearing when they do the D44 swap so....id take it

My jeep is an 88 and the axle i am getting is from an 89. If im not mistaken the c-clip axles began in 1990. Is this correct?

this ^. yes its cheap but you have weak tubes and $$ you can spend to a d44. all you are doing is polishing a turd. what happens when you break it? if you really wheel you will break the d35. cromo shafts you will either bend the tubes and break some teeth off the ring. then what? you will wish you did it right the first time.......

I think it depends on what brand of chromo shafts are in it, some are much better and stronger than others. I know with a 10 bolt Chevy, max tire size you want is probably a 35, but there are chromo shafts that'll allow you to run 40"s so....., I think for the price it's definitely a good deal, especially if you don't have to regear it.

If you've got a welder and some extra scrap metal you could build a fairly cheep truss to beef up the 35.

still will be a small ring and pinion. again polishing a turd. you might as throw money in the toilet and flush it. you will never get your money back. just plain stupid, spend your hard earn $$ on something else.

Sounds like a good deal to me, but I don't crawl either. I guess it all depends on what you use your jeep for. All we have over here is mud so it would be a jam up deal for me. You might need something a little heavier, be your own judge.

Its mostly just mud where i am and the occasional ice and snow. Also it turns out the guy is needing some parts that i have and dont need so we will end up making a trade plus he is going to end up paying me 100 bucks. that being the case i am getting it for free and dont have to regear anything. i think im going to take it and keep looking for a 44 to put in it later.

i had a d35 in my old jeep on 31" swamper wheeled the **** out of it and beat the ever living **** out of it and that 35 never even made a peep
also, bought the jeep with 136k, sold it with 210k and every mile in between was hard wheeling in the woods bouncing off stuff and lots o wheel spin, the 35 did its job
