Free is always a good deal so I can't say don't do it. Plus if it is out of a 1989 there is a good chance it does not have c-clips so that is a potential bonus. The only issue is replacement shafts (I reccomend keeping them with you at all times not matter what axle you are running). It is gonna run at least $250 for a set of extra shafts. I run 35" tires and had a D35 that I never broke, but I never wheeled it too hard cause I was always so worried about breaking it. I have heard of too many breaking to trust one. Now I run a locked up D44 and the peace of mind is worth every penny I paid for it.

Chrome-Moly and Alloy are not the same thing. Most alloy shafts are 1541H and chrome-moly are 4340. Alloys are about 10-15% stronger than stock and are made to flex which is why they can be used in a semi float rear. Chrome-molys are at least 50% stronger and do not flex and can only be used in front and full float rears. There is also a substantial difference in price. For my 60 rear it's about $200 more for chrome-molys.

also if you really wheel your rig you wouldn't be thinking of a 30spline d35
this ^ 27spline shafts will not fit in a 30spline carrier. I bet the ring gear breaks some teeth before the shaft lets go. what are you going to do on the trail when the ring gear teeth break? what spares are you going to carry then?

alloy is just a mix of metals. chromium and molybdenum is an alloy.

yep and it still makes no sense. you break that axle on the trail and you are stuck with no trail spares. Bad idea

We will know sooner or later if he truly wheels his XJ. The tubes could bend, chipped ring or pinion teeth, snapped shafts and on and on it goes.
That rear d35 would last longer if it didn't have a locker in it but it does......
