New guy here reading through posts. Did you get this problem resolved?
I have one suggestion if not. Try using a flathead screw driver to activate the ignition switch just like the rod from the ignition key cylinder does. If it will start like that then you have installed that key cylinder in the improper position somehow.

Its wrong to say as a Cherokee owner but I'm picking up a Mazda tomorrow.
