Default Cherokee won't shut off

I have an '01 Cherokee sport. I can turn off the key and take it out of the ignition and the jeep stays running. only way to turn off is unplug starter and positive battery terminal. what could cause my jeep to stay running?

Could it be a bad ignition switch?

I agree with this. Or it could be a loose or improperly located ignition switch. The mounting holes are ovaled so you can move the unit to adjust when it starts

On the top of the steering column there's 2 small bolts that are a pain in the *** to get to. You loosen those and move the switch to it's desired location.

Fyi, I bought my Jeep with this issue a while back.

Turned out that the previous owner had messed with the relay board and shorted out the ECM. The ECM wouldn't let it turn off.

I put a new ECM in it and it started working properly again.
