Cherokee wont move

I have a buddy with a cherokee aw4 trans and he just put in a new/used transmission and the jeep wont move unless he starts off by manually putting the jeep in first and go from there. any thoughts?

he said he starts it, puts it in drive and it wont go. So he then puts it in 1st gear and it moves

btw the jeep is a 97 and the new trans is a 98

does this sound more like shift solenoids or tcu?

I would say start with the basics. Does it move fine in reverse? Does the nutrual position work? Have you checked all the plugs to be sure they're seated properly? Is the TCM plugged in? Have you checked the fuses to be sure the TCM is getting power? After he shifts to 1st, does the drive position then work?
