Default Cherokee stuttor

Hi, I own a 99 cherokee and have been experiencing some issues for about 3 months. Shortly after starting my Jeep the engine often breaks up and gurgles/stuttors. I have fixed a few things but cant seem to remedy the problem. If anyone out there has any suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks

Well 1st off, what have you fixed? That will help us understand what avenue to take and will avoid saying "fix this" even if you have already done that!

^^ agreed. TPS possibly?? I think this is for older models, but it should be similar for yours. http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl232i.htm

Based on the information that you gave, I would say MAP Sensor or O2 Sensor. You said it would stutter shortly after starting so I'm assuming it starts to mess up before you even give it any throttle input. This would count the TPS out. However if you are giving it throttle input as soon as you start it then a good first thing to do is to remove the IAC motor and scrub the bore with a toothbrush and carb cleaner. Also do the Voltage check on your TPS and adjust or replace as necessary. Also scrub the Throttle Body inside and out with the TB and Carb cleaner. Check all over your intake manifold for possible vacuum leaks.

I have replaced the lower O2 sensor (it was giving a code), also plugs, wires, and distributor cap. Thanks for the suggestions.

I forgot to mention that "yes" it usually does start the stuttor while warming up at idle. However, the issue is not specific to idle. recently it has even started mid road trip at high speed, this situation was more unnerving and prompted me to take a more serious approach. Thanks again.

I have a '99 that does the same thing. There was a thread on another Jeep site about the 99s doing this and I don't think anything ever came out of it. Crank sensor, TPS, MAP and O2s have been replaced on various XJs and I don't think anyone found a cure yet. Mine has 145K miles and almost every time I start it "warm" it bogs down and burps out the air intake just slightly off idle. If you back off the gas and hit it again it's fine for the rest of the trip. No codes on mine either. That and the annoying t-case shifter rattle that sounds like golfballs in a bowl. *sigh* It's a Jeep thing I guess.

My '92 runs perfectly though.

my 97 has been doing that for a while. I have swapped motors (due to bad valve seals) with all sensors that came out of a friends running Jeep, swapped to a 5 speed, swapped computers. The only thing I can think of it is a short in the harness.

On a side note: I bought a harness from ebay that is said to fit a 97-98 XJ but dang near every connector is different. Anyone have any insight if a 99 harness is different>
