if you going to keep the xj you should really get a haynes manual these year jeeps you cannot get codes out the ecm is not set up this way you have to test all sensors with a meter its not hard to do . there is also a module in the distributor its the pick up coil check that

+1 to injector pulse and yes i also agree you need to buy a haynes manual and yes because of these trucks not being obd2 you cant get codes and yes it seems like youve covered all your bases and yes you might want to consider using periods and yes im trying to make a valid point about how annoying run on sentences are

will not start
ok look here,i had that same problem a few months ago,it turned out to be a ceramic diode thats located next to the battery, you cant miss it its white and mesures about 3 inche in length 1/4 inch in diameter ,and has 2 wires hooked to it,it only runs couple of bucks try that and try it,that send a signal to your distributor.

well
there's only one way to find out if you lost comp in one hole, rent a comp tester at you local autozone,or you culd try to put a little oil in each hole and start it,but it would have to be more than 1 hole dead to have this kind of problem, but it be best to test with a comp test tool

If you blew the head gasket to hell and holy high waters, maybe. Or if you didnt put the plugs back in, maybe. Does it even try to crank? And if so, does it sound normal?
