Default Cherokee "Popping out"
I have a 89 XJ that keeps popping out of gear. It makes a ZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound until you pull over and select neutral or park. It will also clunk when going to reverse like it is not engaging correctly. This will not occur in 4LO, but always pops out of any other selection. 2HI and 4HI. Ordered new Novak linkages but seems like it may be in tranny or transfer case. Does not sound like gears meshing. Any Ideas???

I think that you're on the right track with the linkage. My 89 would do that, and it turned out to be the linkage needing adjustment, good luck!!

X 2 on linkage adjustment.

If you have any fabrication skill I would go this rout instead of the Novak setup

transfer case. try adjusting the linkage for that.
