Hi guys, I can buy Jeep Cherokee Pioneer, XJ, 1987, automatic, 2,5L gas engine. What do you think about this engine? On other forum they told me, it's too weak, car is heavy and engine isn't enough, especially with automatic transmission, and due to is fuel consumption same as 4.0L. The car is nice, smooth engine running, transmission is OK, A/C is also OK. So what do you think about this car? And at the end of my post, I want to apologize for my english, I'm from Europe, english isn't my native language.

Well the question is, what do you want to do with the car?
That engine would be fine for daily driving on the road.
But not so sure it would hold up with big tires offroad! lol

Agreed with the above. Fuel economy can be picked up a number of ways, but they generally cost more than the fuel itself. As far as reliability goes, the engine is essentialy a 4.0L with two cylinders removed. There are a couple of small changes that can breathe a little more life into them, but most use parts from the 4.0 Jeeps. Depending on where you are there were probably more 2.1L diesels around than 4.0s

 

What do you mean by "The transmission is ok"?

That almost makes me feel like it's marginal and about to give.

That automatic 4 cyl could very well have 4.56 factory gears under it...that would be NICE!

 

With transmission OK I mean, that it works without problem, smoothly, no hard jumping between single levels in the gearbox. I want use this car as veteran, some light offroad, but nothing big, wheels are original, car is 2 inch lifted. It is U.S. model, bought in USA in 2000. Here are many 4.0L cars, more, than 2.5L. But 2.1 diesels and 2.5 diesels are here also. I'm from Czech Republic. Thank you for your response. Transmission is same on 2.5L and 4.0L ? Can I put 4.0 engine into this car without any major modifications?

 

Nope different transmissions between the 2.5L gas and 4.0Ls. The 4.0, 2.1 and 2.5 diesels had the same. They're all the same bolt pattern, but if you mate a more powerful engine to your current transmission don't expect it to last too long.

One advantage you do have is that starting in 1987 the engine compartment was enlarged to fit the 4.0, so you can stuff pretty much anything in there. If you find a Cherokee that was in a rollover or something, the engine and transmission are probaby still okay. Downside of course will be that a lot needs to be swapped to fit another engine.

 

Ok, thanks for response. I want let in car 2.5L, I think, it's more rare, than 4.0L I am only more calm, when I have spare parts. And If I can put inside 4.0L,
which is widespread here, I will stay calm, because 2.5L engine isn't very easy to find. So thank you, my friends. Tomorow I'm going for that car, then I will put here some photos.

 

Now I have my own piece of U.S.A. at home, I drove it about 30 miles to home, now here is dark and snow with ice on roads, so my ride was very careful. I'm looking forward to some rides in day time. Spare is where it is supposed to be.

Original radio could have been AM, AM/FM, or AM/FM/cassette depending on how it was originally ordered.

 

Yes, I know, there is original place for spare. I want original american radio AM/FM/cassette, not any european. What brand of radio have been used ? I will try to search for it on e-bay, or somethink like that. I want my car in original condition. Like when it was sold new in California in 1987.

 

The BOLT Patterns Are NOT the Same between 2.5 4 cylinders(and 2.1 Diesels and 2.8 V6) and 4.0 Six cylinders. Not even close. Bad Info. 2.5 4 Bangers, 2.8 GM V6 and the Renault 2.1 Diesel share the same bolt pattern, but different flywheel depth. The 4.0s bell housing bolt pattern is much different.
