As with any group of people you will find differing opinions. I think quite highly of K&N and have run their filters on just about everything I have owned for thirty some years. I think they do very well if properly maintained. So you have two opinions and you can still go another way if you like.

Since you like to go fast and offroad, might I suggest bracing the front axle LCA mounts, and either boxing or replacing the LCA's with a stouter set-up? I suggest this based on my own experience with twisting the LCA mount on the passenger side of the axle, and trashing the control arms while playing on the fire roads out in the woods ( stupid @$%#*ng ditch, where did that come from? It wasn't there the last time it rained....). Of course, attaining Interstate speeds on a gravel and dirt road pobably didn't help

haha yeah i either go fast or i'm offroad.... technically my rig doesn't go that fast anyways and the only other autos i've raced have been trucks and suvs [and a cobalt, kinda.] i'm startin to think i can build up my jeep either one way or the other... to go fast or to go offroading.

Personally, I happen to enjoy smoking the ricers, at least to about 60, then, my old XJ is pretty much toast. Now, out in the woods, I love how my XJ flexes, and the way that it hillclimbs (wheelbase is king on a hillclimb, BTW.).

Well, would you consider a 4.0 liter-based 4.9 stroker with about 16lbs. of boost fun then? That is what is going into my Comanche, along with a custom-built AW-4, with a NP 242 X-case so that I can put it in full-time mode and (hopefully) have traction at all four wheels. There is a red Shelby running around here that I am just ITCHING to lay it down on.

Yeah, I agree that you should def. find out what is making the racket. My '88 XJ that I hammer on is wanting me to change the bearings in the motor, at least according to the noise coming from the bottom end. I really need to just go ahead and overhaul the thing, since the rockers are loose from having almost 300,00 miles on the motor, along with the rest of the poor Jeep. Oh, well. At least she still fires every time that I flip the key....for now. As for the V-8 swap, that has been done using the parts from a 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee........sometimes with a manual tranny.

I just finished building a new motor for my trail only XJ and I put a Melling high volume oil pump in it hoping for better oil pressure at low RPM on bad angles.

Well, as long as your clearances are right, you should have no issues with the Melling, as I am running one in the 4.9 Turbo stroker. Did you make sure that the pick-up depth is where it needs to be? I usually set mine at 3/8" from the bottom of the pan on a street motor, and 1/2 inch for all-purpose useage.

I'm actually using a pan I modified with 3/16" plate so the clearance will remain after some use

How you get 4.9? stroked and overbored?

Yep. Took the block 0.60" over, and the 258 rank was welded up, then offset ground, with some block clearancing needed for the new crank throw.

How many miles so far?
Do you expect it will be reliable longterm?
