Scroll down the page and look at and read how they installed the wooden dowls in the lifters to pull them off the cam. This should explaining what I am trying to, but I think everyone is to quick to say it wont work because they read on the internet it wont work or they pull the head to do the cam swap on their jeep. This is how I will do it when I swap a cam in mine which I hope is soon.

This all seems dumb. I can have the head off a 4.0 in 30 min..... so I guess I don't understand why one should spend time to go to the hardware store to buy stuff to save from pulling a head off.....

It's worth it to me not to pull the head because I don't like going to the machine shop to have the head resurfaced, then buying a new head gasket, head bolts, all the other gasket you pulled, and all the other stuff you need to replace when doing it right. That's around $125 added expense. My machine shop charges around $75 for the resurface. Enough dowl and PVC will cost $15

Its a 4.0. It takes a head gasket, intake/exhaust gasket, and vc gasket. 39.99 set
My best time for a 4.0 head in the rig is 28 min 47 seconds. From hood open to head on the ground. All hand tools.
If the hg wasn't leaking no need to have it machined. But I always have em surface it because its a whopping $40 here.

Why doesn't the OP do it without pulling the head? Document it in write-up form for all of us to see? Photos, special dowels, tools and a few good "Ah ****s". included. Stopwatch will also be needed. All this pondering and pontificating about something that obviously nobody has done on a 4.0 and probably never will is a waste of good electrons.

So you wouldn't resurface the head and I'm sure the extra couple dollars to have it checked for cracks isn't worth it either? I bet even if the head gasket wasn't leaking that its is warped, and you would reuse the head bolts? Seems like a lot short cuts

All you need is one time to the hardware store not hard to buy wooden dowls and PVC pipe it's cheap and cames in many feet long sticks and is way cheaper then the trip to your machine shop then to the auto parts store.
