I need to change my Cherokee Sport 6.0L engine transmission fluid. The manual list Mopar part # 4773590 but searching online I get that # is superseded with 5013457AA.
Now I get this is Mopar ATF+4 but the manual also mentions Mercon. What's Mercon? Would any ATF+4 could be used, say Mobil, Valvoline, Castrol? I rather use Mopar but just curious.
Input, comments, suggestions, and also directions on how to change the fluids will be extremely appreciated.
Thanks.

You want DexronIII/Mercon compatible That is available almost everywhere. I use the Walmart Super Tech stuff in all of my vehicles and it works fine...about $12/gallon.
If I were you, I would drop $25 and buy 2.Then just warm the trans fluid by driving a few miles, open the drain plug and approx. 3.75 qts. Should drain out. Refill with the same amount of the new stuff.Drive it for a week and do the same next week. You'll be good to go.

You meant to say 4.0L and the correct transmission fluid is Mercon/Dexron III and its readily available in all auto part stores as well as Walmart. ATF+4 is not recommended for AW4 transmission.

Chrysler superceded the correct fluid for the AW4 (formulated using a license from a competitor) with their own proprietary fluid once the transmission was no longer under any warranty. ATF+4 is known to cause slippage in sime units.
The transmission manufacturer has always specified D/M fluid.
