Cherokee 1996 Export build PCM dilemma.
Hi,
I have a good one for you.
For the really, really, really, really, Tech savvy!!!
Cherokee 1996
VIN: 1J4FN28V0TL311187
Engine # 608MX28111 (4L, 6 Cyl.)
Transmission Tag:
Aisin Warner AW4
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Part # Model #
4810179 30-43LE
966 E 60561
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
4 Speed AW4 4WD
Automatic
I have a problem.
I need a PCM.
History:
I left the Jeep for five weeks and when I returned the PCM was dead.
No lights, no start.
No trauma to PCM.
Battery good.
The number on the PCM is: P56041 298
CALIBRATION: 96 XJ 4.0L A4 BUX PCM
This is an Export build. Sent to Trinidad and Tobago.
This PCM is not easily available in the US.
Main difference-
No Catalytic Converter
Leaded Gas/Leaded Fuel Emissions
200 KPH analogue Speedometer
There is NO Oxygen Sensor installed.
The closest I can get is P56041 296 I believe it is the same but might have a slightly different program. It will start the engine and run but gives a CEL and Fault Code 21.
I got one (5.6041 296) and I am using that.
BTW, is this model OBD I or OBD II?
The Questions:
Can a 56041 296 be programmed to a 56041 298?
If you leave the O2 sensor disconnected, will it do harm?
Forget the fuel!!!
I need time to solve this.
In my case, if I install an O2 sensor, will it work?
Why? How?
Thanks,
Joe

Update:
I ordered the two O2 sensors over a week ago and they have not arrived.
The CEL is on and it was flooding and stalling all over the place.
I have found a walk-around for the flooding and stalling.
I disconnected the MAS and now it does not flood and rarely stalls.
It seems the flooding was mostly at idle and when it stalled, it would be very difficult to start.
It is not idling really well but I can drive it until the parts arrive.
Sometimes it takes two tries to get it started.

Hi live over seas and have a XJ ( 1991) that is an export version. I ordered a PCM or ECM from E-Bay...and it works just fine. what you have to make sure is, that the new PCM is for your transmission. I mean if you have a 5 speed, that you get the PCM for a 5-speed and not for an automatic. I installed it, and it works just fine. I hope this helps.

Hello there!, i ran your #'s and see what you mean. Chrysler has no record of that pcm #. I would search Ebay or someplace capable of repairing the original pcm.
Looks like your jeep was originally sold to the Min of Defence Spain...kinda neat!

Sorry, I was away.
The Mopar vendors in the US will not sell me one.
I tried to order one.
Nobody on the US Forums will talk about programing a PCM to run on unleaded gas or without a Cat convertr.
Crysler will not release the program so the repair shops cannot help.
Actually, it was ORDERED by the Ministry of National Security in Trinidad for the Police.
The deal is for me to go to my local dealer and pay thousands US$ for the PCM.
But I have a plan. Technology is on my side.

What's a "MAS"?
Drive it like it is until the O2S's arrive, install them, then see how it functions.
